ARE NONCOMPETE AGREEMENTS ENFORCEABLE?
JULY-AUGUST 2017 NO. 132
COMPANIES COMPETE BUT WON’T LET THEIR WORKERS DO THE SAME
Americans, we are told, believe in competition.
But a shockingly large number of workers — 30 million, according to a report from the Treasury Department — are shackled by what are called “noncompetes,” which are agreements forbidding employees to leave their job to work for a competitor or to start their own competing business.
And the number is growing fast.
You’re Fired!
JUNE 2017 NO. 131
FIRING SOMEONE IS NOT EASY. AND OFTEN MORE DIFFICULT TO HANDLE IN A RESPECTFUL WAY.
If you remember the TV show and the host of “The Apprentice,” you’ll remember those famous last words he hurled at many of the disappointed contestants.
Firing someone is, quite possibly, the most difficult thing to do as a leader.
The idea alone can initiate feelings of guilt, sadness, anger, and even relief – because once that struggling employee is gone you won’t need to think about firing them anymore.
COURAGE: THE DEFINING CHARACTERISTIC OF GREAT LEADERS
MAY 2017 NO. 130
COURAGEOUS LEADERS INSPIRE EMPLOYEES, ENERGIZE CUSTOMERS, AND POSITION THEIR COMPANIES ON THE FRONT LINES OF SOCIETAL CHANGE.
Bill George, currently a Senior Fellow at Harvard Business School, former Chair & CEO of Medtronic, and author of Discover Your True North, explains why there aren’t more of them.
Over the past decade, I have worked with and studied more than 200 CEOs of major companies through board service, consulting, and research as a member of Harvard Business School’s faculty.
WHAT THE WORKPLACE OF THE FUTURE WILL BE LIKE
APRIL 2017 NO. 129
THE NEW “WORKPLACE CULTURE” IS SHIFTING. ARE YOU READY?
Companies are facing a radically shifting context for the workforce, the workplace, and the world of work. These shifts have already changed the rules for nearly every organizational people practice, from learning and management to executive recruiting and the definition of work itself.
Every business leader, no matter their function or industry, has experienced some form of radical work transformation, whether it be digitally in the form of social media, for example, demographically, or in countless other ways.
